Introduction
Is the love of God active in our lives? In other words, are we carriers of blessing? What are we doing for the Kingdom of God? Are the talents we've received from God being put to work for His Kingdom?
Definition
Generosity is an act of freely sharing with others, without constraint and with much love and generosity (2 Corinthians 9:7). It also speaks of kindness in meeting the needs of others (Proverbs 22:9). It is a divine investment that brings many blessings, both to the one who gives and the one who receives (Proverbs 11:25, Luke 6:38). In the parable of the talents, the Lord shows that we always have something to give. Giving is not limited to material things, but also includes our time, our affection, our love, our smile, etc.
BENEFITS OF GENEROSITY
#1. Opens doors for evangelism — it can help win people's lives for the Kingdom of Heaven (Hebrews 13:16).
#2. Fights selfishness (Matthew 25:14-30) — it shows the value of doing good from the perspective of what you can bring to others, especially by putting yourself in the other person's shoes and doing what we would want others to do for us if we were in a difficult situation (Acts 20:35).
#3. A sacrifice pleasing to God: it releases God's favor on the believer's life. King Solomon, for example, benefited from God's attention because of the sacrifices he offered Him (1 Kings 3:15). This does not mean, however, that God can be manipulated — He is sovereign and makes all things good in His time (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
PRINCIPLES OF GENEROSITY
#1. Humility and joy. Acts of generosity are deliberate and unforced, and are not meant to compare ourselves to others or feel superior to them (Proverbs 21:14).
#2. Discretion: preserves the other person's dignity and does not need man's approval (Matthew 6:3-4).
IMPACT OF GENEROSITY ON THE COMMUNITY
#1. Unity and solidarity: meets needs within the Christian community. In this context, mutual aid solved the problem of poverty within the early church (Acts 2:44-47).
#2. Manifests God's love on earth — giving what's essential, not merely the surplus, to everyone with discernment, believers and non-believers alike (Galatians 6:9-10).
