The LORD is not impressed by what man does to appear spiritual. He does not look for works, but what pleases Him is what we carry inside, in the heart. This is why David was chosen from among his brothers, who were taller and more physically imposing than he was (1 Samuel 16:7).
The Lord seeks a heart that has stopped pretending, a heart that cries out, "I need You" (Isaiah 29:13). The psalmist calls it a broken and contrite heart — not perfect, but available (Psalm 51:17). A heart that lets itself be shaped, purified, and restored, and that says, "Lord, I need Your grace." God never despises a heart that comes to Him in complete honesty. He seeks a heart touched by His light, one that acknowledges its wounds. Jesus Christ left His throne for this very reason, and He does not turn away from an honest, though imperfect, heart. He asks man to entrust Him with his heart because He knows it is fragile — it can worry, grow weary quickly, be influenced, or make poor decisions (Proverbs 23:26).
God asks for the heart because it is the part that guides one's actions (John 4:23). It is therefore important to always ask what the LORD gains in each decision we make. What are the benefits of entrusting Him with our heart? Trust in God (Psalm 125, Proverbs 2:6, Isaiah 40:31):
